12 SCOTT COUNTY TIMES Wednesday, June 2, 1976 OBITUARIES By Mrs. Johnnie Harrell Preston McDill Is Honored On 70th Birthday Carthage Plans 10th High School Rodeo June 22-27 Mrs. Lou Jones Funeral services for Mrs. Lou Jones, 61, were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 30, from the Ott Lee Chapel in Morton. The officiating ministers were Rev.

John Carter and Rev. W. E. Bass. Interment followed in the Morton Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones passed away on Friday at the Scott County Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Scott County and a lifetime resident of the Morton area. She was presently a resident of Route 2, Morton, and was a member of the Morton United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, J.

T. Jones, Doddsville, and A. D. Jones, Morton; two daughters, Mrs. Dee Howerton, Pearl, and Mrs.

Fern Blissett, Morton; one brother, Barney L. Boyles, Hattiesburg; two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Kurtz, Louisville, and Mrs. Alma Meriweather, Little Rock, 21 grandchildren, 41 greatgrandchildren, and 4 great-greatgrandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Richard Jones, Bobby Jones, Frankie Howerton, Jerry Jones, Mike Blissett, and Tony Brock.

Honorary pallbearers were Gene Paul Jones, Charlie Jones, Orvill Jones, Larry Jones, Ronnie Jones, Scott Jones, Jimmy Blissett, and Huey Howerton. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Preston McDill, of the Sulphur Springs Community, in Scott County, was the gathering place on May 23 for family and friends to celebrate Mr. McDiU's 70th birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. McDill are the parents of eight children. Their oldest daughter, Patsy, died in 1972 at the age of thirty-four. Of their seven living children, six joined them for the day with one son, Frank, unable to attend because of a recent move to Buffalo, New York.

All eighteen of their grandchildren were present to offer Happy Birthday wishes. A picnic lunch was spread under the pecan trees and those who enjoyed the delicious food and birthday cake with Mr. and Mrs. McDill were: E. J.

McDill, Joe and Heather, Mrs. Flora McDill, Mr. and Mrs. A. T.

Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Turner all of Conehatta; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Turner, Billy and Wendy, Meridian; Mr.

and Mrs. Harold Turner and Paige, Hattiesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Rigby, Forest. Afternoon visitors were Mr.

and Mrs. Charles Morrow, Conehatta; Mr. and Mrs. Kyle McDill, Walnut Grove; and Mr. and Mrs.

Edgar McDill, Forest. Everyone extended best wishes for many, many, more happy birthdays to Mr. McDill. DANFORTH AWARD The social science department at Jackson State Unicersity has been awarded $2,000 by the Danf orth Education Foundation for the purpose of sponsoring a ethnic studies workshop June 14-26. The workshop will be held in the Classroom Complex at Jackson State.

Persons invited to participate in the workshop include: Professor Vine Deloria, attorney, minister and author from Denver, Colorado. Bradford Funeral Home of Forest was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Homewood Methodist Cemetery with Rev.

John Case and Rev. James Myers officiating. Pryor, who was a resident of Forest, died Saturday, May 29, 1976 after an extended illness. He was a member of the Homewood Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs.

Linda May Pryor; two sons, Paul Pryor, Jr. and Clifton Pryor of Forest; one daughter, Melissa Pryor of Forest; his mother, Mrs. Zola Mae Pryor of Forest; four sisters, Mrs. Jane Tadlock of Homewood, Mrs. Pam Wallace of Forest, Janet Pryor of Jackson and Sheila Pryor of Forest; two brothers, Waldo Pryor, Jr.

of Belton, Texas and Eddie Pryor of Forest; grandmother, Mrs. Nina Pryor of Lake. Pallbearers were Larry Philips, Ronnie Hallman, Edward May, Harry Culpepper, Coley Harold Boykln, Tommy Smith, Gerald Epting, Jimmy Pryor and Johnny Jones. Charlie Johnson Funeral services for Charlie Johnson, 69, were held at 3 :00 p. m.

Wednesday, May 26, from the Ludlow Baptist Church. The officiating minister was Rev. Ronnie Jones. Interment followed In Ludlow Cemetery. Johnson passed away on Tuesday at the Scott County Hospital in Morton following a lengthy illness.

He was a native of Leake County but had been a resident of the Ludlow Community, Route 2, Lena, for the past 55 years. He was a retired farmer and was a member of the Ludlow Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. D'vo Goolsby Johnson, Ludlow; one brother, Lewis C. Johnson, and two sisters, Mrs.

Armond Carroll, and Mrs. Leo Johnson, all of Ludlow, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Lonnie C. Johnson, Lewis A. Johnson, Charles Johnson, Bubber Renfroe, Crisler Munday, Cecil Burnside, Roy Lawrence, and Claude O.

Fltzhugh. Ott Lee Funeral Home of Morton was in charge of arrangements. Glad to say that Mrs. Eula Sigrest is doing better at this time and is at home. Mrs.

B. E. Marler of Forest visited Mrs. Eula Sigrest Wednesday afternoon. Sorry to hear that Lamar Rigby is not doing good.

He is in the Lackey Hospital. We wish for each one a speedy recovery. Mrs. Louella Hall of Ridgeland were Friday visitors of the Johnnie Harrell family. I returned home with her and visited with James Clois Harrell and Mr, and Mrs.

R. C. Bailey and Laron also attended a birthday dinner on Sunday honoring Laron on his 21st birthday. Others enjoying it with him were Mr. and Mrs.

Lamar Wallace of Cash, Mrs. Louella Hall of Rigeland, Mrs. Bettie Mills, James Clois Harrell of Jackson. Mr. and Mrs.

Toney Benton and boys of Jackson were Friiay night guests of their parents and grandparents, Mr. and Ms. Kent Benton. Glad to say that Mrs. Hilda Bailey is doing well after surgery.

Her mother, Mrs. Allie Wallace of Jackson spent the week with them last week. Gerald K. Eure Is Promoted To Associate Rank University of Alabama faculty member Gerald Keith Eure, a native of Forest, has been promoted to the rank of associate professor in the School of Social Work, according to Dr. Howard B.

Gundy, academic vice president. Eure received an Associate of Arts degree in 1953 from East Central Junior College in Decatur, a Bachelor of Arts from Mississippi College in 1957; and a Master of Social Work in 1959 from Tulane University. He received his Doctor of Education degree in 1975 from the University of Alabama. Before joining the University faculty in 1968, Eure served as executive director of the Family Counseling Association in Huntsville, Ala. He has also served as a district child welfare supervisor with the Mississippi Department of Public Welfare.

The promotion is to become effective Aug. 16. ALCORN MEETING The Alcorn State University Industry Cluster met on campus recently. The College-Industry cluster has a membership of forty-one business and industry members, two educational institutions and five government members. i rnFS-.

if i ii ii a mm Rodeo time is fast approaching in Carthage. Square County Jaycees and the Mississippi High School Rodeo Association reveal that the tenth annual Mississippi State Championship High School Rodeo will be held June 22 through 27 in the Carthage Coliseum. High School students completing grades 9 through 12 may enter. Entry deadline is June 8, 1976. The aix day rodeo will feature barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, cutting horse competition, goat tying, and a queen contest for the girls.

The boys events will include barback bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, cutting competition, bull riding, and saddle bronc riding. Boys and girls may enter team roping. Last year the state championship rodeo attracted 127 contestants from all parts of the state. Square County Jaycees are expecting an even larger number this year. Modern camper and stable facilities are available for contestants.

The top four winners in each event will represent Mississippi in the National High School Rodeo Finals to be held in Sulfur, Louisiana, later this summer. Interment was in the Independence Methodist Cemetery with Rev. Doyle Moore and Rev. Felix Miles officiating. Young Phillips passed away after an extended illness at the University Hospital Saturday, May 29, 1976. He was a member of the Independence Methodist Church and a student at Morton Junior High School Survivors include his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Roy Phillips of Morton; two sisters, Roxie Ann and Rhoda Lynn Phillips; one brother Charles Terrance Phillips all of Morton; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peek Lewis and Mrs. Burley Phillips all of Morton.

Wiley Ray Hill Funeral services for Wiley Ray Hill, 35, were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 27, from the Leesburg Baptist Church. Rev. Danny Henderson and Rev.

Edgar Smith were the officiating ministers. Interment followed in the Leesburg Cemetery. Hill passed away on Tuesday at the University Hospital in Jackson, following an extended illness. He was a lifetime resident of the Leesburg Community In Rankin County, and was a member of Leesburg Baptist Church. Mr.

Hill was employed as an electrician for Glass Containers Corporation in Jackson. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Posey Hill, Route 2, Morton; one son, Tony Lester Hill, and one -daughter, Sheila Lisa Hill, both of Route 2, Morton; his mother, Mrs. Lucy Hill, Route 2 Morton; four brothers, T. W.
